An average tomato plant may produce 10 pounds of tomatoes In a season, but a healthy tomato plant can produce up to  70 pounds of tomatoes per season depending upon the variety.  Pruning tomato plants is a learned skill, that can be easily mastered.  You can pinch the leaves or stems off that you want to remove.  You can also use shears to produce the same effect.
